Children's Storytime Activity

3 Years

Wondering if your 3-year-old is meeting communication milestones?

By age 3, many children are becoming more conversational and are able to communicate their wants, needs, and ideas more clearly. Common communication milestones include:

  • Following simple two-step directions

  • Identifying common objects, actions, and body parts

  • Using short phrases and sentences of 3 or more words

  • Naming familiar objects when asked

  • Answering simple questions, such as "What is that?"

  • Taking turns during conversations

  • Participating in simple pretend play and play routines

Concerns about behavior, sensory, or social development?

Children develop at different rates, but some signs that may warrant further evaluation include:

  • Limited eye contact during interactions

  • Little interest in pretend or imaginative play

  • Preferring to play alone and avoiding interactions with peers

  • Difficulty adapting to changes in routine or transitions

  • Frequent tantrums when expectations change or directions are given

  • Strong reactions to sounds, textures, or other sensory experiences

Questions about your child's physical development?

Many 3-year-olds are able to:

  • Run, climb, and explore with confidence

  • Jump with both feet off the ground

  • Balance briefly on one foot

  • Complete simple puzzles and shape-sorting activities

  • Manipulate toys that require hand coordination

  • Move around without frequent falls or bumps

When Should You Consider an Evaluation?

You may want to speak with a professional if your child:

  • Has difficulty understanding simple directions

  • Uses very short phrases or limited vocabulary

  • Rarely engages in pretend play

  • Has trouble interacting with peers or family members

  • Frequently falls or struggles with age-appropriate motor skills

  • Walks on their toes most of the time or shows unusual movement patterns
