6 Year Developmental Milestones

Wondering if your 6-year-old is meeting communication milestones?

By age 6, children are continuing to develop language, literacy, and problem-solving skills that support success in school and everyday life. Common communication milestones include:

  • Recognizing many letters and numbers

  • Understanding and answering "why" and "how" questions

  • Understanding opposite concepts such as big/small and hot/cold

  • Following multi-step directions

  • Retelling stories with important details

  • Participating in conversations with peers and adults

  • Using age-appropriate vocabulary to express thoughts and feelings

Concerns about learning, behavior, or sensory development?

Some children may benefit from additional support if they experience:

  • Difficulty recognizing or remembering letters and words

  • Challenges with reading, writing, or copying information

  • Confusion between left and right

  • Difficulty maintaining attention and focus

  • Trouble organizing schoolwork or completing tasks independently

  • Sensitivity to sounds, textures, or crowded environments

  • Frequent frustration during learning activities

  • Difficulty interacting appropriately with peers

Questions about your child's physical development?

Many 6-year-olds are able to:

  • Skip, hop, and gallop with coordination

  • Catch, throw, and kick a ball

  • Use pencils, crayons, and scissors with control

  • Manage buttons, zippers, and other fasteners independently

  • Sit upright and maintain good posture during school activities

  • Participate in playground games and sports with peers

When Should You Consider an Evaluation?

You may want to consult a professional if your child:

  • Struggles with language, reading, or early academic skills

  • Has difficulty following classroom directions

  • Frequently loses focus or becomes overwhelmed

  • Has challenges with fine motor skills such as writing or cutting

  • Appears clumsy, falls often, or has difficulty coordinating movements

  • Avoids social situations or has difficulty making friends
