Stuttering

What is stuttering?

  • Stuttering is a communication disorders, characterized by interruptions in the flow of speech (Stuttered moments) and negative impact on quality of life.

  • Stuttering can cause tension during communication, avoidance of words or situations, emotional reactions, and overall difficulty communicating.

What Does Stuttering Look and Sound Like?

Stuttering may include:

  • Repeating sounds, syllables, or words (e.g., "b-b-b-ball")

  • Stretching sounds longer than expected (e.g., "sssssometimes")

  • Pauses or blocks where no sound comes out

  • Difficulty starting a word or sentence

Some children may also show physical signs when speaking, such as blinking frequently, looking away, tightening facial muscles, moving their head, or showing signs of frustration during communication.

How can Speech therapy help?

Speech therapy helps children develop confidence and effective communication skills. Therapy is not focused on making a child speak perfectly. Instead, it helps children communicate more comfortable, participate in conversations, and develop strategies for speaking in different situations.

At Speech Cloud, we work closely with families to create individualized treatment plans that support each child's communication needs.

When Should You Consider an Evaluation?

Early Childhood (Ages 2-5)

Many young children go through a period of disfluent speech as language develops. However, if stuttering continues, becomes more frequent, or causes frustration, an evaluation may be beneficial. Early support can help children develop positive communication habits and confidence.

school-Age Children (Ages 6-12)

As children grow, stuttering may begin to affect classroom participation, reading aloud, friendships, or self-confidence. Therapy can help children learn strategies for communication, self-advocacy, and managing speaking situations.

Adolescents (Ages 13-18)

Teenagers often face increased communication demands such as presentations, interviews, social interactions, and preparing for college or work. Therapy can provide tools to build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and navigate challenging speaking situations.
